I was going to link to this article a few weeks ago and explain why I thought federation wasn’t the problem here, but waiting for Threads (a social network built on top of ActivityPub and with federation being turned on “soon”) launched and made my case for them.

50 million users signed up in one day.

Federation is not the problem, forcing potential new users to learn how federation works is the problem.
