People Keep Asking for This, but That Doesn’t Mean we Should do It

Chance Miller: Instagram exec says there aren't enough iPad users to justify making a dedicated app

Mosseri’s answer pretty much contradicts itself. He tries to claim that there aren’t enough iPad users to warrant making a dedicated Instagram app, while simultaneously saying that Instagram gets this request a lot. Mosseri seemingly acknowledges this contradictory message, hence the way he followed up with two more tweets with a bit more context.

All I will say in Mosseri’s defense is that I work in product at a company who serves many customers as well (not Instagram numbers, of course) and I’m all too familiar with hearing customers screaming for a new feature, we implement that feature exactly how they wanted it, and then it turns out they didn’t actually want it, so the screaming stopped but people didn’t use the thing.

I can’t share details, of course, but ask any iOS developer how many users demanded an Apple Watch app and then proceeded to never use that watch app.

Don’t get me wrong, I would love to see a great Instagram app for the iPad too, I just have to don my PM hat for a minute here and see where he’s coming from.
