Apple Should Not be Publishing "Designed by Apple in California"

And John Gruber seems to agree:

Apple’s products deserve this sort of treatment, but part of me says someone else should have published it, not Apple.

I saw this news story hit on my way to work and have been thinking about it all day. After thinking about it for much of the day, it just feels wrong. Not wrong in a moral way or anything that extreme, but just as something that will confirm some peoples' worst feelings about Apple, namely that they are resting on their past successes.

The idea of this book is great, as obviously Apple's hardware is worth celebrating. I think Jonathan Zufi did a great job with his book Iconic, but it just different when it's done by the company who makes this stuff. One is a fan celebrating their favorite brand, the other is a corporation patting themselves on the back.

I have been an Apple user since 1995 and my 4 main tech devices are an iPad, MacBook Pro, iPhone, and Apple Watch, so I'm pretty strongly in the Apple fan family. I love this stuff, but this is just odd.
