VR is hovering (and what does a “big” product mean anymore?)

Benedict Evans: The VR Winter Continues

it’s obvious that the devices will get better, lighter and cheaper, but much less obvious whether that’s enough. How many people will care? We should be careful of saying ‘no-one will do that’ - we all do things every day that ‘no-one would ever do.’ But equally, we should be careful of presuming that everyone will want this just because you do, or just because it’s really cool. Drones and 3D printers are really cool too, but most people don’t care, and even games consoles are far from universal

I think the smartphone has set unrealistic expectations for what a “massive” product category is. The PS5, Switch, and Xbox Series consoles have sold a combined 230 million units and they still get lumped into drones and 3D printers because 1 billion people don’t own a current generation one.

Anyway, as I wrote in February, I don’t foresee

a near future where the Vision Pro (or VR headset in general take over from the smartphone or personal computer as the fundamental computer in our lives:

With very few exceptions, new computers don't replace anything, they just get added to the pile of computers in our lives already.

Time will tell, of course.
