Experiment Time! Living on iOS Alone

The acquisition of a 10.5” iPad Pro yesterday has me thinking about the iPad in a more serious way again. This thing is fast, beautiful, and exceedingly portable. It’s the perfect computer for me. With that in mind, I’m going to try to keep my MacBook Pro closed for as long as

24 Hour Coding Project: Crypto Board

Every once in a while I like to build something quickly and just kick it out the door as fast as possible. This has previously lead to things like Quick BIN Lookup and App Bottlerocket coming into being. Yesterday I did the same thing and have created Crypto Board which simply shows the current values

A Minor Change to BirchTree

The end of the year is always a good time to look back on what you have done in the past 365 days and figure out what you want to change for the new year. For bloggers like me, this means looking back on the work you created and consider if you’re writing things

Appearance: Bring Your Own Device #27

I had the pleasure of joining Greg Morris and Nathan Shochat on the Bring Your Own Device podcast to talk about the Pixel 2, Android, Animoji, and something to do with Qualcomm and Broadcom (which was totally over my head). Thanks, guys!

What “iPhone lover” means to me

I’ve written 3 major phone reviews in my time at BirchTree: * An iPhone Lover’s Review of the HTC One M8 * An iPhone Lover’s Review of the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge * An iPhone Lover’s Review of the Google Pixel 2 I have said right in the title of each of these reviews

New Media inevitably becomes Old Media

Over the past 10 years the people who have gotten new Apple products1 has shifted significantly. It used to be major newspapers were first in line to get everything, and they would have the exclusive first reviews out of the gate whenever a new product launched. 10 years ago Apple bloggers and podcasters had to

Today’s Forecast Spooky Update (and sale!)

I’m happy to say that Today’s Forecast has been updated just in time for Halloween with a new “Seasonal” theme. If people like this I’ll keep them coming for the rest of the year (specifically Thanksgiving and Christmas). Also, the app is also on sale for the first time ever! It will

BirchTree is 7 Years Old!

I completely missed this anniversary while I was sick last week, but I’m incredibly happy to say that as of October 17, 2017, BirchTree is 7 years old! 🎉 🎉 🎉 Here’s what the last 4 of those 7 years look like in my most Bezos-esque chart ever: Things are going well, and they’ve

The best apps and services for doing work (for me)

It seems like everyone (including me!), has a fascination with what tools people use to get their work done. It’s been a while since I did one of these, so I figured I’d give it a go! Here is a relatively complete list of the apps and services I use to get my

Progress

Back in March 2017 iDownloadBlog linked to my iOS 11 lock screen concept and credited me as “app developer Matt Birchler.” The identification as an app developer threw me a little at the time. It was clear the author if the iDB piece didn’t know me personally, but after reviewing my internet profile to

Why I made a weather app

“Why the hell would you make a weather app in 2017?” That’s a question that rattled around in my brain for a good portion of the last few months. Why was I taking the time and effort to make what must be the 75,454th weather app on the App Store? Outside of the

Introducing Today’s Forecast: A Fast, Beautiful Weather App for iPhone

I am quite honestly overcome with excitement that I get to announce the release of Today’s Forecast for iOS today! My summer project in 2017 has been this app and after months of hard work I’m happy to be able to officially say it is available in the App Store right now. The

Thanks for being patient

I just wanted to take a second and thank everyone out there for being patient with the blog over the past month or so. My post volume has decreased a decent amount, and that’s because I have 2 major projects in the works that are keeping me from writing smaller, more regular posts. https:

My little App Store experiment: Simple Refrigerator Magnets

As some of you may already know, I’m currently working on my first iOS app and I hope to have it available in the next few months. This has been a whole adventure in its own right, but in the meantime I wanted to get some experience with the bureaucracy side of the App

A BirchTree sick day

Pardon the break in the action on the site over the last few days. I've been quite sick with the flu and have been lying in bed most of the day. So there will be no new app video this weekend, or any new pieces on the site until the new week. Sorry,

Why I'm diversifying BirchTree in 2017

Just a quick programming note on the site today. I've gotten a few questions recently on why I felt the need to invest time into things besides writing on BirchTree this year. A rational assumption would be that it's because readership is dropping and I am trying to find something that
